While fibroids are often discussed in terms of their medical and financial impact, experts say the condition can also place enormous strain on marriages and family relationships.
For many Ghanaian women, the journey with fibroids extends beyond hospital bills and treatment. The emotional and psychological effects of the condition can significantly affect self-esteem, intimacy and family life.

One man, identified as Mr. Smith to protect his identity, told our reporter that his wife’s battle with fibroids changed the dynamics of their marriage. Speaking off camera, he claimed he gradually lost physical attraction to his wife because of the changes he observed during her illness.

According to him, the situation affected their intimate relationship to the extent that he no longer saw himself engaging in any sexual activity with her. After six years of marriage, he decided to file for divorce.
Even though there's a separation, Mr. Smith says he still meets the financial needs of their son " I provide financial support for the child by sending money every month despite the separation".

Chief Executive Officer of the Fibroid Foundation Africa, Elizabeth Korasare, says beyond the physical pain and financial burden, fibroids can have devastating emotional and social consequences for women.
She explained that many women struggle with body image and confidence after undergoing surgery, which can affect their relationships if they do not receive adequate emotional support.
Health advocates are calling for greater public education on fibroids, emphasizing that women living with the condition need medical care, counselling and support from their families rather than stigma or discrimination.
As conversations around fibroids continue, campaigners say addressing the emotional and social impact of the condition is just as important as improving access to affordable treatment.
