TRUST AND CAUTION: HOW SAFE DO YOU FEEL ACCEPTING FOOD OR DRINKS FROM STRANGERS AT EVENTS

A level 300 production by Lilian Gyeni

A stranger offer you a drink or food at a social gathering, where the drink appears refreshing, the food look delicious and everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. Yet hesitation often follows with a single thought that crosses the mind ,Do I really know what I’m about to consume? In today’s social settings, this simple question has become increasingly important.

Music festivals ,weddings , food fairs and campus events often attracts large crowds with variety of foods and drinks . While many of these offerings are perfectly safe, others may contain ingredients that are not immediately disclosed. This makes it difficult for consumers to know exactly what they are eating or drinking.

One growing concern is infused products. These are foods or drinks or candy mixed with substances like alcohol or cannabis or marijuana which contains unlabeled ingredients. Without clear information, consumers may unknowingly take in something that affects their behavior, judgement and health.

Many infused products look exactly like ordinary snacks or gummy sweet, brownie, cookie, or fruit drink may appear completely harmless despite containing intoxicating substances. Because of this, appearance alone should never be used to judge whether a product is safe.

At many events, people are more cautious with some asking questions before accepting anything and also others simply refuse offerings from strangers. Especially when there is no clear labeling which reflects growing awareness of food safety and personal wellbeing.

Drinks with unclear labeling

This cautious behavior is becoming increasingly common. Events are crowded places where strangers freely distribute food and drinks. Trust, however, is no longer automatic but must be earned through transparency.

“ It’s not about being rude, but it’s about getting home safe. Look out for yourself and look out for your people too” by Sandra Ofori. This message reminds event attendees that asking questions before accepting foods or drinks is a responsible decision.

There have also been reports around the world of individuals unknowingly consuming cannabis-infused brownies, sweets, gummies, juices at social gatherings. Although many infused products are legal in certain countries when properly regulated, offering them without informing consumers is both unethical and potentially dangerous. Proper labeling and honest communication can prevent accidental consumption.

Event organizers and vendors also have important role to play. Food should be clearly labeled, ingredients should be available upon request, and staff should maintain high standards of hygiene and professionalism. These practices help build trust between vendors and customers.

Ultimately, safety depends on awareness and transparency. Consumers must stay alert, ask questions, and make informed choices before accepting foods or drinks from strangers. At the same time, vendors must be honest about what they serve and these careful decisions on both sides help protect everyone’s health and ensure safer social experiences.
