Behind the Glam: A Male Makeup Artist’s Struggles

The beauty industry has traditionally been viewed as a space dominated by women, but an increasing number of men are challenging that perception by building successful careers as professional makeup artists.

While their work often results in flawless transformations and confident clients, the journey behind every glamorous look is rarely as effortless as it appears.

For many male makeup artists, success comes with overcoming stereotypes, earning trust, and continually proving their talent in a society where gender expectations still influence career choices.

For one male makeup artist, the inspiration to pursue makeup came from his mother.

As a child, he enjoyed helping her get ready by applying powder and assisting with her appearance.

What started as a childhood interest gradually developed into a passion and eventually became a profession. However, turning that passion into a career was not without challenges.

According to the makeup artist, one of the biggest struggles he has faced is dealing with society’s perception of men in the beauty industry.

Many people questioned his decision to become a makeup artist simply because they believed makeup was a profession reserved for women.

Some potential clients were initially hesitant to book his services, while others doubted his ability before seeing his work  which made it difficult to establish himself during the early stages of his career.

The challenges extended beyond his work and into his everyday life.

He recalled being laughed at because of the way he dressed and the assumptions people made about him simply because he was a male makeup artist.

Some people mocked his appearance, questioned his masculinity, and discouraged him from pursuing a career they believed was meant for women.

As more men enter the beauty industry, stories like his demonstrate that talent, dedication, and professionalism are far more important than gender.

Behind every perfect glam is not only creativity and skill but also resilience, determination, and the courage to challenge societal expectations.

While the final makeup look may capture the public’s attention, it is the perseverance behind the brush that truly tells the story.

In an interview with Leonard the artist ,he stated some few challenges in the beauty  industry .

According to Leonard,(the therapist),”planning a particular look does not always come easy “.

He prefers involving the clients during the process in order to avoid any confusion and difficulties at the end of glam .

Even  so, result can come out completely different which is one thing he sometimes struggle with but of course the good results conquers the bad and he loves what he does.
