 THE NEED FOR INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM IN GHANA.

Autism spectrum disorder(ASD) is a neuro developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, learns and experience the world.

Every child has the right to education, yet many children continue to face barriers toward education in Ghana. Teachers who work with autistic learners say they need to be educated for building communication and confidence not just academic development. The schools established for these special kids are not just to teach them academic work but also to provide them with occupational and vocational skills.

Madam Baaba Enchill, the founder and CEO of Hope Setters autism center explained why acces to education is vital.

These schools are not just established to teach autistic learners academic work but also help the socialise, built their confidence and also show the world that these children despite their disability should also be exposed to education. According to teachers, these practical activities play an important role in preparing autistic learners for the future. By learning different skills, they can discover their abilities, strengths and weaknesses and gain more opportunities.

Even though they may face some challenges, they are still able to push through for the children. Madam Peace Attopley Sena, a teacher from Hope Setters Autism Center expressed one of her difficulties. " My challenge is when I have to move a student to the next level and things do no go the way I expect and they regress, it really affects my work because I want to see them up there"

Autistic learner engaging in academic therapy 

Inclusive education is not about placing children with autism in classrooms. It is about creating learning spaces where they are understood and supported.

Teachers and caretakers believe that with greater public awareness, more trained teachers and adequate support from the government, children with autism can recieve the quality education they deserve.
