The traditional wedding is getting centre stage over the white wedding. A white wedding was for many years the ultimate dream of the couples who were to be married. Nowadays, more couples are opting for traditional weddings as the primary event in the marriage celebration.
The image of a bride with the white flowing gown, walking down the aisle became the standard picture of the perfect marriage. Weddings in Ghana are more than just a traditional event occurring prior to the church wedding now. This is a trend that is shifting wedding practices.
These are now viewed by many couples as the most significant aspect of their marriage as they are a reflection of their culture, family values and identity. This trend is partly due to the need for reconnecting with cultural heritage. Traditional weddings feature colourful kente and other traditional clothing, religious marriage practices and traditions handed down from generation to generation.
They also place a focus on the families, allowing them to play a central role in the ceremony, making it more personal and authentic. Other couples are making the choice to tie the knot because of the costs of wedding organisation. Many of the elements of a white wedding come with a hefty price tag including church decorations, bridal attire, reception space, wedding decorations, catering and entertainment so it can be burdensome for families.
Traditional wedding can be costly too, but many couples think that it provides them with more flexibility and worth due to the fact that they can have fun with the essence of the wedding ceremonies instead of the needless extravagance. Traditional weddings are being influenced by social media quite a bit. Cultural ceremony can be elegant, stylish and luxurious without compromising on its cultural significance, as beautifully produced photos and videos have demonstrated.
These online displays have made many couples who are engaged to marry to proudly adopt their heritage rather than see it as a second choice to a white marriage. Wedding planners and event vendors have also caught up with this changing trend. From Miss Rita's view, she say's many couples these days opt for the traditional set up for their marriages, so many people are leaning and adjusting more towards this.
Now it's up to individual values and priorities rather than what society expects. Traditional weddings are becoming more popular as a result of the general love for culture and identity in today's Ghanaian society. People are opting for ceremonies that reflect their own cultural experiences.
With this trend on the rise, traditional weddings are showing that they can also be equally memorable, meaningful and beautiful as white weddings.
